Kaboom

2006 Release. Australian guitarist James Muller has been always spoken in musician circles highly praised by John Scofield, Chad Wackerman and others. On this brand new release, he teams up with Scofield bandmate Bill Stewart on drums and Matt Penman on bass. "Kaboom" has five of James' compositions, two by Sean Wayland and one "standard" by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein.

Recorded in NYC it's a absolute blinder - listen to it and you'll see why John Scofield rates James as one of THE top players.

"This is a great album. James has it all... I love his playing" - John Scofield

All Out

Rarely does a musician arrive on the jazz scene with such an impact as James Muller. Almost as soon as he came to Sydney from his native Adelaide, there was a buzz about "this new guitar player" and now James seems to be the most sought after sideman or guest in Australia. In the past couple of years James has added fire and passion to the music of many groups led by or including more experienced jazz musicians.

Now here, presenting his own dynamic group, James Muller makes a statement of his own musical accomplishments. Nobody doubts that he will make a lasting impression on jazz music as a guitarist who has a fine lyrical approach as well as an ability to take off at surprising, even amazing, tangents. James can fire up any musical environment.

As a leader he has assembled a superbly compatible group, perfectly suited to his own performance and composing style – the sure yet imaginative bass of Adam Armstrong and Craig Naughton's stimulating drumming provide positive support and inspiration. The distinctive voice of Tim Hopkins playing tenor saxophone graces three tracks with his usual attack, and another unmistakably powerful voice, Andrew Robson on alto saxophone, brings more joy to these ears.

I have put in a word for the engineer, Neale Sandbach, who has developed so many excellent projects for me. His help and understanding went a long way to ensure the success of this album.

If I were to choose one track for you to sample it would be "Nice One", but I know that you'll want to hear the whole album – over and over.

- Jim McLeod
